   One final thrust from Giggs. A cross in from the right with van Nistelrooy and Solskjaer lurking, but Lucio and co marshal it back to Butt to hoof clear.

   Ballack plays it into the corner but eventually Keane wins it back. Thumped forward but Solskjaer loses out in the corner - goal-kick

   Blanc, getting ever further forward, loses the ball. Ze Roberto zips up field and Veron brings him down. Huge relief for the home crowd

   Four minutes to be added - one goal will do it for United

   Berbatov is suddenly clear with United exposed at the back - a great tackle by Blanc though. United march forward for another corner. Butt can gather though

   United throwing everything forward. Scholes' ball is spilled by Butt and Forlan's looping shot is cleared off the line. It's back in for Solskjaer: a great chance but the Norwegian skies it over the bar. Not this time, Ole.

   Corner easily cleared though. United try again, Forlan rather ambitious from 30 yards - it's well over

    Neuville gets huge applause as he's replaced by Berbatov. United move it in from the left. Keane takes a shot from deep, a great drive that Butt palms around for a corner

    United increasingly desperate. Giggs on the ball again but the offside flag goes up

    Giggs thrusts forward, finding Keane in field. The Irishman shapes to shoot but his way is blocked. Leverkusen break sharply and Schneider sees Barthez off his line. An audacious effort from half-way but it lands on the roof of the net. The keeper was there though

    Barthez gets caught by Schneider in the box, but the ball is beyond the area and safe for United. Caution thrown to the wind as Forlan replaces Brown.

    Van Nistelrooy loses out in the box and Leverkusen break quickly down the right. It's Schneider with the cross but Blanc and Silvestre get it behind for a corner.

    Time running out for United. Silvestre dribbles upfield, but Schneider bumps him off the ball. Vranjes replaces Basturk as United prepare to take the free-kick

    Leverkusen are defending deeper now, but Basturk gets the chance to run at United and Irwin trips him as he bears down on Brown. Ballack takes the free-kick, but Barthez is more than comfortable with that one

    Silvestre turns well down the right, but Placente blocks his path. Again though, referee Neilsen is having none of it

    Then United's best chance. Giggs escapes down the left to supply a venomous cross. A mix-up in defence allows Scholes to strike from the edge of the box, but it's high and wide

    Freekick now to Leverkusen, Ze Roberto floating it in. Brown half-clears and Sebescen gets caught offside as the ball comes back toward goal

    Veron takes but it's too low and Zivkovic can clear

    Sebescen fouls Giggs in midfield. United play it to Veron. This time a much better ball for Solskjaer at the far post. It's a miskick but United build again, Silvestre wins a free-kick out on the left

    The anxiety continues for the Premiership champions - Veron picks up a loose ball but plays a loose pass forward and keeper Butt gathers.

    Ze Roberto's protests are too loud for the ref's liking. He sees yellow and will also be suspended

    Then United's best movement of the half. Irwin feeds Scholes, who lofts one for Solskjaer on the right. The Norwegian cuts back looking for Veron, but he's late in the challenge and it's a freekick.

    Easily gathered by Barthez though. United break but Giggs loses control wide out on the right
