'1-0 to the Everton' as their spectacular start to the season continues. After a summer of turmoil the Toffeemen are third and just one point behind Chelsea. They came to Fratton Park to do a job and did. Neither side showed any swashbuckling intent with Pompey's strikers particularly subdued. Berkovic and Berger were ineffectual but some credit for that has to go to Everton's defending, with my man-of-the-match Gravesen especially strong in midfield.

Kamara tries his luck with the referee by throwing himself to the floor in the box but the well placed referee is having none of it.

Yakubu drifts out wide left and beats Hibbert to send over a cross. Put just a little too much on it though and no Pompey men can conect. Goes out for a goal-kick.

Free-kick is punted into the Pompey box. Ferguson was inches away from getting a touch that would have resulted in a goal. Stefanovic was strong to hold him back and a grateful Hislop makes sure he holds on to it.

Great movement from Weir nearly breaks the deadlock. Corner swung in to the near post. Weir was on to it whilst the Portsmouth defence remained static. He tried to angle the header back across goal but it went too straight and wide of the goal.

Bent, playing out wide now, shows industry rather than guile to work down the right wing and earn a corner.

Free-kick from Everton is poor but they retain possession and, with numbers in the box, Ferguson wins a back post header that almost drops to Kilbane before Hislop nicks in front of him.

Bent guilty of taking too long with a decent chance. Pompey players were drawn to Kilbane but his diagonal pass picked out Bent on the edge of the box in oceans of space. Took a couple of touches to control it and then rather snatched at the shot, draging it well wide.
